Cron Fails on Search Index during preg_match of Numbers

I just finished migrating millions of records into Drupal6 from my previous custom developed website. It is now churning along attempting to index all of that content.

I noticed that cron was failing every time, even when I had the "nodes to index on cron" set to the smallest number possible -- 10.

After some serious detective work, core hacking, and benchmarking, I discovered what I believe is a bug and was wondering if anyone has any insight into it.

The following line of code in the search_simplify function in search.module turned out to be the culprit:

  $text = preg_replace('/(['. PREG_CLASS_NUMBERS .']+)['. PREG_CLASS_PUNCTUATION .']+(?=['. PREG_CLASS_NUMBERS .'])/u', '\1', $text);

Attempting to run the preg_replace on this string will die a terrible death every time. I eventually ended up having to comment out that line of code. I really hope I don't take drupal.org down by posting this message. :)
