When I enabled and made Simply Modern my default theme, it dumped all of my sidebar content into the banner block.

Does the patch in #686510: Left sidebar not on left if custom logo uploaded and no user sections solve the problem?

It may be due the region named as "sidebar-left", you may rename the region name as "left" in all the places inside the theme and try install the theme.

I would assume that you just need to move the content to the right block on the blocks page. The block regions may be called differently from the previous theme.
