This is easiest solved by using JQuery 1.3, which is provided by the Jquery update module. However, you need to use the 2.x-dev version at this time.

I'll update to make a dependency on jquery update, but since the normal 1.x released version doesn't do the job, it will still be a bit obscure.

YOU STILL NEED THE 2.x-dev version of jquery_update for this to work with IE8!

After the update to jquery.translate 1.4.5, it is possible that this is no longer an issue.
