Phone numbers lose the Hyphens (dashes) between numbers when it is posted

I have a phone field in my form and it requires the format xxx-xxx-xxxx for us/canadian numbers as expected. However when I save the form and view the results, the phone number changes to xxxxxxxxxx. Does anyone know if I am missing something or doing something wrong? Does this have anything to do with the separators? Thanks.
