print node terms from a specific taxonomy or vocabulary $vid

I'm using a freetagging taxonomy CCK field to enter multiple node author names. I'd like to print each author name in the form of a byline with each author's name linking to any content written by that author. For example:

Story By Barak Obama, Dmitry Medvedev, Nicolas Sarkozy and Gordon Brown.

I found and tried this link Print a particular vocabulary's terms associated with node but (as another reported in the comments) it didn't work very well for me. It seems to stomp on top of existing array data and didn't print any taxonomy terms from my <?php $vid ?>.

Can anyone recomend a solution or at least point me in the right direction?
