Porting of any taxonomy-based modules to Drupal 7 is non-trivial... terms are now attached to nodes (and other fieldable entities) as fields and almost all the taxonomy-related functions have changed because of this new architecture. There's no term_node table anymore, for example, and terms do not have synonyms any more.
So, I wouldn't expect a port to emerge out of nowhere - it will take some time and I'm sure the maintainer would appreciate the help if you want to make a start...
No, no work has yet begun on D7. Before I can even think about it I need to get RealLife™ under control and get caught up on the current issue queue (which I find personally embarrassing that my modules are so far behind since my near death).
As Tanoshimi said, any help you would like to offer would be greatly appreciated.
