Hey,

So what are you guys thoughts on a new site with Drupal 6? The site will likely take 2-3 months to develop. I see Alpha 1 is out for Drupal 7.

How hard is the upgrade going to be for 7? How long do you guys think before 7 is out? How long before most of the main plugins work and it is even useful or really possible to run a commercial site with Drupal 7?

Use Drupal 6 now. Move to Drupal 7 when all of the modules you need have upgraded.

I highly recommend you wait. There are going to be security issues and other problems with Drupal 7...that's why it's in alpha..it hasn't even made Beta. It'll probably be a solid year before it really get's released and enough modules have been ported to really make it usable. There are millions of modules out there but 90% of them are not for Drupal 7 yet..it'll take awhile for the most popular and useful modules to get brought over. I would use 6..then when they release their first stable release I would still give it a few months worth of padding so the modules will be ported.

This is just filled with opinions, so if someone has a conflicting opinion, I apologize.

Drupal 7 may be released soon, but in all likelihood many, if not most, of the modules you'll be using for your site won't be ready for Drupal 7 yet, which has been the main problem with Drupal releases in the past. If past experience is any indication, it will probably be a year or so after Drupal 7 is out before it will have all, or nearly all, of the key Drupal modules that are available for Drupal 6. So you'll probably want to go with Drupal 6 for quite a while. The upgrade will require some thinking, but really isn't entirely necessary until Drupal 6 is being phased out, which may be years away.

Hope that helps
