I have a node that has a -1 rating which appears to be the same as a rating of +1.

I think there is some bug. Just so you know, I used a relationship that used points, and total score, but still views thinks -1 = +1.

With the current dev release of Vote Up/Down 6.x-2.x-dev, Votingapi 2.3 and Views 2.8 the rating of -1 and +1 do not appear the same. +1 is rated higher than 0 and -1 is rated lower than 0.

We might want to consider this bug fixed unless someone else can reproduce this problem. I couldn't.

Ok, I've tried it making my own view, with 2 nodes one with -1 and other with +1, and it works :-)

I'm attaching the view.
