I am a Drupal newbie. Having built my site on a development machine (O/S Windows XP) I set about applying a theme. Zen appeared to be a good approach. I followed the instructions at node/226507 (How to build your own sub-theme 6.x-1.x). However my sub-theme never showed up on the list of themes.
I did ensure that the cache was cleared by clicking the relevant button at Administer > Site configuration > Performance.
Can anyone offer any clues as to what I might do now.
Thanks

Garrett Albright commentedWhere is your subtheme's directory in the directory structure of the site?
Did you remember to rename the .info file?
mgladding commentedTo clarify, you need to change STARTERKIT.info.txt to yourtheme.info

fflynn commentedFirst of all thank you both very much. I was suprised and delighted by such a prompt response!
The problem was that I renamed STARTERKIT.info.txt to mytheme.info.txt
I did not notice this because I was working on a windows XP machine and the file extensions were not visible. So I could not see the txt at the end. One of the wonderful features of Windows! Anyway I forced explorer to show the file extensions and got rid of the txt and it worked! So this issue is resolved.
Thanks!

Farbenfeuer commentedHi Drupal Community,
i have to revive the thread, because i have the same problem. Though i did everything just as the documentation said. I double and trible checked everything, read every single sentence carefully, but no matter what - i can't find the Subtheme listed in the Appearance menü. I even tried to delete and reinstall the Zen Theme.
sites/all/themes/mysubtheme - i altered the .info to the same name as the folder, and i searched and replaced everything as the manual reads.
I refreshed the page, i cleared the cache, i did pretty much everything i could think off, but i still can't see my fault. :(
Maybe one of you can help me out here.
Thanks in advance
Tim

Farbenfeuer commentedNevermind, it was kind of the same Solution as mentioned above: For those who got here, being as smart as i was -> Dont just change the filename, go to the information (cmd+i) and be sure you change the file suffix! ;P
*sigh* thx anyways

skimble commentedFarbenfeuer - thanks for posting your final solution/forehead smack moment. After reading several strings on this topic, it didn't click 'til your comment.
I thought I had checked that the .txt extension wasn't there, saved it w/out in TextEdit, and assumed there had to be a new cause to this problem.
I didn't realize that it was still the cause of the problem until I saw your (cmd+i) comment. When I looked in the file info, lo and behold, the blasted .txt was still there. I used Xcode to Save As and my sub theme appeared. Thanx!

Garrett Albright commentedMan, OS X has been doing crap like that ever since the beginning. I guess it's useful in that it makes it harder for people who don't know what file extensions are to break stuff, but for the rest of us it can be a colossal pain. At any rate, using the Terminal to see what a file's name really is can also be useful.

maaark commented(cmd+i) just saved my life! Maybe a little melo-dramatic but I could have sworn the .txt extension had been dumped. Could not understand why my Sub-theme wasn't showing up in my Admin/Appearance page. And after reading so many install sub-theme HOWTO guides this little tip was missing in all of them. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Peters commentedHi all,
now Zen is appearing, theme list..
Thanks!
Garrett Albright commentedYou're doing PHP development with Xcode?
At any rate, Zen won't appear in the module list; it'll appear in the theme list.
