On a new Acquia drupal install, using location for a new content type, as I set some fields to be required rather than allowed, they vanish from the node add form and can not be set. I tried going back to the Garland theme to rule out theme issues, and can still replicate the issue.

Any thoughts?

I'm getting this too. I've got regular Drupal. I can allow location fields and they appear, but when I require them, they're gone from the form.

It seems that you have check 'required' checkbox for cck in field configuration 'Global settings'.
