My pathauto > URL path settings > 'Automatic alias' checkbox defaulted to unchecked until I disabled the node block module.

I can't reproduce this either. Please outline the steps that would be needed on a clean Drupal install to reproduce this.

I have the opposite problem. I have node block installed, but when I choose to uncheck the "automatic alias" option when creating a node, it's rechecked automatically whenever I edit the node again.
