Are you sure this is the cause? I mean, it works if you specify a size of 640x480?
It's more likely to be a problem with the source video. Please let us know the resolution, bitrate, format, codec, audio codec... of the video you're trying to convert. I've seen too many problems with videos that have the sound track at 8000Hz. ffmpeg fails to transcode this (at least in my server and local computer).
