I am looking desperately for somebody to help me set up google adsense moduel.
I installed adsense module and add a profile field according to author's instruction and input my id into custom profile field for user who's id = 1. I have try different format of my id, with or without ca-, ca-pub-, prefix. But I always get a "There is no site owner Google Adsense Client ID defined. Please define one for user id 1 as per instructions." message in administer -> settings -> adsense module.
What the hell should I do to make it work?

You don't even need a module... just create a new block, set its input format to unfiltered HTML, and copy and paste the code from Google into the block. You can see an example on the left column, toward the bottom, at http://ryan.grinhost.net. I fiddled w/ Google's theming tool to get it to look similar.
The AdSense module helps.
It's useful for changing your color scheme, for example. It lets you not have to visit Google's code generation pages.

(Just so people know, I decided to stop using that block on my main site... wasn't generating revenue and just seemed annoying. ^_^ You can see the example at http://ryan.grinhost.net/backup. I only put this here because I get hits almost daily from this old post.)

UGlee,
I've just set up google adsense module and found the same problem you reported. What I did to accomplish installing it was:
1 - I created the profile field as instructed
2 - When I went to the adsense settings page, I got the error message but... I clicked on "Save configuration" and guess what? On the 'required parameters' fieldset I was then finally able to setup the profile field.
3 - I hit 'Save configuration' again and got the error message again.
4 - Then I setup everything, clicked on 'save configuration' and now it seems everything is fine. No error messages anymore.
Good luck,
Emiliano.

Instructions verbatim:
I have had exactly the same problems as above until I followed the instructions verbatim (including the part that has not been mentioned explicitly)
These instructions are for the very latest version (28 June 2006) of Adsense for Drupal 4.7.2 - update the Adsense module first if it is pre 07/2006!
(I don't know if this is relevant in this case, but I have had a bellyful of seeing "Old Pages" when I do administration tasks on Drupal 4.7 - I suspect some caching scheme at my Web Hosting Co. Thus before I undertake installations/updates of new modules, I go to MySql (or PHPMyAdmin), select the appropriate database and enter the following SQL statement "TRUNCATE cache;" This step has reached the status of "Sacred Religious Practice" with me where Drupal 4.7 is concerned.)
1) Log in as the Administrator (user 1 of your site)
2) Enable the Profile module
3) Make sure you have backed up your database and run the admin.php script after enabling or updating the Adsense and/or Profile module
4) Go to profiles (Home » administer » settings) and create a "single-line textfield" and enter the following:
a ) Category: "Google Adsense Client ID"
b ) Title: "Google Adsense Client ID"
c ) Form name: profile_adsense_client_id (The instructions state "profile_google_adsense_client_id" - but that gave me the errors described above - but I have not re-tested to verify this as an issue.)
d ) Explanation: "Google Adsense Client ID"
e ) Visibility = Selected
f ) The user must enter a value = checked
g ) Visible in user registration form = checked
h ) Save Field!!
5) Now go to the user profile for Administrator - User 1 (Admin - Users - "Administrator" - Edit) and select the new tab titled "Google Adsense Client ID" and enter your Google Adsense Client-ID
6) Now go to "admin » settings » adsense" and make sure that under Google Adsense Client ID Profile Field the "Google Adsense Client ID" is selected. Note that at this point Adsense should appear without errors. If not enable the "Google Adsense Client ID" and "Save Configuration" again.
7) At this point there were no further errors and the other Adsense options could be set.
The trick lay in going to User and setting explicitly the Google Adsense Client ID value for the Administrator value first, before going to Admin > Settings > Adsense. I noticed that if you had the older Adsense module installed, the contents of this field would be enabled by default with the old value of the Adsense Client ID without errors. On new Adsense installations the problems described above would appear.

Where am I on the Drupal map on Frapper?
Correction
Item #4f should NOT be checked!
In fact, afterward this process has completed, item #4g may have to be unchecked as well!
The reason is that the adsense field shows up in the user registration and won't allow a new user to register unless this field is filled in. That particular error cost me about 2 weeks of zero new user registrations on the site!
I suspect I should file an issue and request clearer instructions with this module. I did the above as USER 0 (admin user) although the field shows up in every new user registration.

Where am I on the Drupal map on Frapper?
Changed
I changed the wording in the help section to break it down into two: one for settings needed for all sites, and another for revenue sharing sites (make visible on registration form, and required).
Thanks

To use the module you have to enable the profile module, goto the profile settings and add a field that will hold Google AdSense IDs. Then, edit the value of that field for user 1 (your first account ever) and enter the default AdSense ID. Then go back to the AdSense settings and you'll be able to use it. Works like a charm.

hey
I entered the information, set the settings, I even converted the Adsense 4.7 to 5.x, and then I installed, configured it, added my profile field with pub-xxxxx id... and then I went back to configs and set the profile field. I get NO ERRORS, but only the default box that comes up when there is no ads. I get NO ERROR, and it doesn't display my ads, just a blank box saying "google adsense".
To display, i edited blocks and saw all 8 ad blocks there, so I enabled the content one for 468x60. I have tried everything, but it refuses to display ads. Help pls.

what is the advantages of using adsense module
hi,
since making custom blocks and pasting the code directly is mentioned, i wanted to post my massage here.
what is the advantage of using adsense module rather than making normal blocks?
best regards...

Few
Here are a few I can think of now.
- You can change ad formats, colors and channels without going to your Google account change the code and then paste it again in a block.
- You can have revenue sharing with authors of nodes on your site
- You have a log of the clicks and which pages they were clicked from.
- You can restrict ads to appear on only certain pages (globally, not per block which you can do with pasted code).
- It is easier to integrate in themes when you do not want to display ads just in blocks. For example read my article on various ways to display Adsense on Drupal 4.7 for more.

Bug in profile module?
Hi there,
I've been testing Adsense module and today I faced something very weird:
I ...
1 - ... installed adsense module
2 - ... enabled profile module and created the field as instructed in the readme file
3 - ... as user 1, informed my adsense id
4 - ... using mysql query browser, run a query against the table 'profile_values' and *found no record*
5 - ... logged out and logged in as user 2
6 - ... informed my adsense id
7 - ... found the record in the table!
8 - ... edited user 1 profile (my user 2 has this right) and informed my adsense id
9 - ... found the 2 records in the table!
From this on, everything worked fine.
So, my conclusion right now is: *maybe* there's a bug in profile module which prevents user 1 from entering a value for his/her own profile --- and then adsense module cannot get it.
This is just a guess and should be investigated further.
Regards,
Emiliano.

Did you select from the list?
In the admin/settings/adsense, did you select from the list the name of the profile field that holds the Google Adsense ID?
Also, did you select "Private field, content only available to privileged users"?
If you select "Hidden profile field", it will not work.

adsense mod
I guess I have a few questions
in the instructions the read like this
# Go to Administer -> Site building -> Modules and enable the profile module.
# Go to Administer -> User management -> Profiles and create a new profile field of type "single-line textfield". Name this field something like "Google AdSense client ID", and form name "profile_google_adsense_client_id". This is a required configuration parameter. At a minimum you should enter this field for user 1.
Note that the new profile field must be setup as: "Private field, content only available to privileged users". All other values are either insecure or will not work, so do not use any of them.
and in the Profiles setup it asks for
Category: Google AdSense client ID
Title:
Form name: profile_google_adsense_client_id
what needs to be in these fields?
can you tell me how to fill out the form name, I dont understand where to put in the parameter for user 1?
also, I don't want this to show for other users, no matter what I try I the still have this tab under "edit"

Consider an adsense lite module?
Hi,
Would you consider an 'adsense lite' module similar to the previous version of this module without the gymnastics involved in getting this to work? Not everyone needs the functionality to be able to pass adsense credits to different authors.
After upgrading a few things this error pops up today:
Table 'krooninf_drpl3.adsense_clicks' doesn't exist query: INSERT INTO adsense_clicks (ip,timestamp) values('196.30.129.66', 1156236391) in /home/mysite/includes/database.mysql.inc on line 120.
Now, I could fix that (this error was not there a while back but after running update.php this morning it is there!!!!!) , but, and this is a big but, there are a few modules that are constant headaches. The TinyMCE module is one, Events module another and this version of the Adsense module another one. I have to look at where I am wasting my time, thus those modules that need nurturing, care and time wasting activities must go.
A version of adsense lite without user profiles etc would have been a candidate though.
Casper Labuschagne
Where am I on the Drupal map on Frapper?
Does update.php break this module?
After my post above, I gave adsense module a second chance (the umpteenth chance actually)
I excuted this code as a SQL query in order to create the tables for this module that has disappeared since a previous update.php:
However, I made changes to my site yet again, (testing a new module) and today I tried to create a new user and again the adsense field is a required field for all users.
I can only conclude that something, somewhere is seriously broken. I do not have time and patience to battle with this. Again please consider a simple "Adsense lite" without the new functionality that stuffs up my sites. This module holds advantages over pasting pure adsense code in a block.
Casper Labuschagne
Where am I on the Drupal map on Frapper?
adsense module is not
adsense module is not display ads to me (administrator) only to visitors and i dont know if display ads to members.
Same problem with adsense
I have the same problem, the administrator doesn't see ads. Others do. Maybe its not a problem in one sense - as admin I should not be clicking on my own ads but it would be nice to see them.
www.christian-faith.com/forjesus
Intentional
This is intentional, and "by design" so the admin would not accidentally click on the ads, and Google thinking its fraud.

This module seems to be rather finicky
I finally got it working on one site, after it crashed my server and I had to contact my hosting company to have them restart mySQL. I then set it up exactly the same as the working configuration on another site and when I try to save the configuration I keep getting the message:

when I go to: /admin/adsense/settings
I get the following message...

I only have one user on this site, and thats user 1.
I would like to get this module working asap, anyone out there figure this one out.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Having Adsense Module Issues - Pointed Here
Hi Everyone
I have today installed the Google Adsense Module, with "unexpected results".......
I am running Drupal 4.7.4 on a remote host, which has the latest patches installed (22 Dec 06).
I have the "Sinatra" theme in use.
I have profiles enabled, have set up the single line text field, have entered my Adsense ID in my Admin (User 1) profile, have enabled all the right bits in Access Control, etc. I've followed as many instructions as I can find.
However, I still get this following error every time I try to click on Settings|Adsense......
Missing argument 2 for drupal_get_form() in /mounted-storage/home36b/sub004/sc28648-SMNR/corefire.co.uk/includes/form.inc on line 61.
Obviously I therefore can't set up any adsense stuff using the module - I have Adsense running in a block which I custom created, but it isn't ideal.
Can anyone point me in the direction of solving this minor headache please......
Thanks.

Custom blocks
I used the adsense module briefly. I recommend uninstalling the adsense module and just creating a new block and pasting the google adsense code into the block. It is much easier and cleaner. It also isn't that hard to recreate the adsense code and paste it in again if you want to change the ad format.
Double banners with adsense
I have followed all instructions to the letter. I can see the banner, have selected it in blocks to be on banner group 1 and instead it comes up with a banner above my regular banners, so now there are two. I can't get it to actually upload into the banner sequence with the others I have loaded. How can I force my adsense banner inline with the others? I also have it appearing only as a blank box with the words "Google AdSense" in it. I have entered the colours, the channels, etc. What am I missing? I am using 4.7 and all 4.7 modules (and HEAD modules) as far as I know.
Another matter that is curious is that, in the banner section, under the content area, when seeking help for javascript it says that this area won't work for Google Adsense (that has been mentioned several times elsewhere as well, that you must use the injector and adsense modules) unless you tweak your page template. How can that be done? It seems that it would be easier to just tweak the template and be able to use the banner module as the other way is not working.
All advice gratefully received.
Thanks!
Fixed, but still 1 question for author.
Just to let everyone know,
Fix
========
1) regarding the profile_ name, type it EXACTLY as the author says.. "profile_google_adsense_client_id". If you type in anything else, you'll get that red error message.
2) Now.. after you correct that mistake, the profile value for administrator will be empty again. So go and add it again, INCLUDING the 'pub', so "pub-xxxxxxxx"
3) Once done, go back to the adsense settings, click save, and it should work :)
Problems
=========
* I can only see an empty banner with the words 'Google Adsense' in it.
--> This is because you didn't do the above, and you tried to add a block.
* I'm logged in but can't see my own ads, why ?
---> This is not a bug. It's intentional as described in the help doc in settings page. It's so that you don't click on your own ads. Log out, then you'll see it.
Now, Question for the author,
I don't see any explanation for the 'group' and 'channel' tabs yet.. Is there any? If i do find it before the reply, sorry ;)
Good work .

Is it somehow possible for
Is it somehow possible for regular users NOT to have a field "Google AdSense client ID" when they go to edit their profile? It doesn't make sense for regular users to have this field if I am not using "revenue sharing".
Possible solution
In my case, I set the profile field to "Hidden profile field, only accessible by administrators, modules and themes." despite what the author says in the documentation. I also set the category name to "Misc" so when a registered user goes to their profile, they see an empty Misc tab in their settings. It's an ok comprimise.
It seems to work for me. The google adsense code generated in the page is the same and works as expected. I don't understand why the author would say that it must be set to "Private field, content only available to privileged users." A lot of users are running commercial sites, not open-source/gpl/share-n-share-alike websites.
Will work for user1
It will only work the way you set it up if you are user 1, and only need Google Adsense ID for the site owner.
You cannot set it up as hidden in a revenue sharing setup and ask users to enter their Google ID, since they will not see that field when they edit their account.

How do I get the custom channels to work?
I"ve added custom channels to the adsense module. (Both module and injector are displaying ads correctly and efficiently... great modules!) I haven't been able to figure out how the channels are supposed to work with Drupal.
I am using the following code:
Sample code
Also in the injector I use:
[adsense:300x250:1:5]
300x250 = ad size, 1 = group 5 = custom channel.
So how does this work? Where do channel stats show up?
My logs shows:
I tried adding the identical custom channels to my Google account and I'm not receiving any channel data.
What am I doing wrong? What am I missing?

Adsense is working fine its the channels that don't work
Thanks for your response, but placing the ads is not what I am having an issue with.
I've utilized the method you describe, but I also use the "Adsense Injector" (great module) and the "Adsense Module" with PHP tags to give me the ability to place ads within nodes (article content). Blocks are great but limit the placement of the ads. For example, using blocks, you can't place an ad within the text of an article. With the module and the injector, you can place an ad within a table inside an article giving you far more flexibility with design.
Within the Adsense module, you can create "Groups" and "Custom Channels". I've followed the instructions and the ads work great, no problem there... but I can't figure out how the custom channels are supposed to work. I've always used channels in my Google account to track the ads and their effectiveness. Without the use of channels, I can't create useful reports.
Can anyone tell me how to use the Channels in the Adsense module for Drupal so that they show up in my Google account and give me the ability to create reports?
Thank you

Where are the channels?
SymmetryPower,
You've disabled comments for non-registered users, so I'll post here...
a) Your 15 steps are almost exactly what's already in the help portion of the AdSense setup page, so it doesn't add much value. Expanding it so that it answers the questions that are left unanswered on the Drupal site would be nice.
One of those questions frequently asked is: How do you tie channels to users and get a users channel to display for all posts by that user?
Another question is: How do I add more than 10 channels?
Answer both of those and you'd have a great guide...

It's not hard, Khalid Baheyeldin has done a nice job of variablizing many important static vars.

Adsense setup issue
I ran into the same issue as above. I found that if you have the default theme changed it will not let you see the Adsense ID in the user profile edit portion.
So, set your theme back to the original theme and you will be able to see the ID. Then you can set it back and the module will still be active.

Margle,
To not have either the Google AdSense tab or the field visible on profile pages:

During the initial setup of the AdSense module, change the default “Configuration” instructions as below:
To use this module, you need to do the following first:
Go to Administer -> User management -> Profiles and create a new profile field of type "single-line textfield".
Category: Personal information
Title: Google AdSense client ID
Form name: profile_google_adsense_client_id
Visibility: Hidden profile field, only accessible by administrators, modules and themes.
Everything else on this form can be ignored.

Then, in My account -> Edit for user One:
Under the “Personal Information” tab enter your Google ID, which is something like "pub-9999999999999", and click Submit.
Then reload your Google AdSense settings page, and then set “Google AdSense client ID profile field:” to “Google AdSense client ID” and click Submit. If it spits errors/warning about client ID not being set, reload the settings page until you've cleared your browser's cache, or worst case close your browser, or manually clear the browser cache, re-login and then re-set the “Google AdSense client ID profile field” until it sticks.
All other instructions are the same.

If you've already setup under the existing instructions, just edit the profile field and change the Category per above.
