With plesk and other similar environment, there is an '/admin' directory as well as a '/user' directory. This prevents mod_rewrite to work properly.

Other solutions like those found in forum seem not work on my system (apache 2, php 4.2).

if there would be a "can't fix" i would use that. this is beyond Drupal's capabilities. In this, do not use Clean URLs. Or put Drupal into a subdir.
