Drupal, PHPFox or PHPizabi?

specialt - June 28, 2006 - 13:25

hi, i was wondering if someone could advise me. I'm trying to create a page similar to myspace based mainly around audio/video pages, with an online shop. I've started developing it with drupal, but I've seen something called PHPFox and one called PHPizabi. What would be my best option?

emc2orz - August 4, 2006 - 02:57

I am having the hard time to find community for phbizabi as its new to the market (but it's been a year and seems phpizabi spread very slowly).

for the time you spend on Drupal to make a myspace alike, i think the best way is to buy the software already in the market.

here's what I have found:

- phpfox
- dzoic handshake
- e-friend
...........and goes on and on
if you googling it on "social script" or "myspace clone" , you get bunch of links.
Just need to filter a little bit.

I haven't decide what software to go, but two options in my pocket: phpizabi or dzoic-handshake

Best PHP Social Networking Software

social123 - January 7, 2009 - 17:00

Funny how quickly things change. I remember evaluating PHPizbabi around that time, and thinking how great it was. I had 3 projects that went down the toilet because that software project was abandoned.

I ended up purchasing PHPFox to rescue my projects, and haven't looked back. It's great. It now has extensive support (some 21,500 members in the forum), hundreds if not thousands of mods, supports Paypal, CCBill, 2Checkout - and supports Open Social as of January 2009.

As a developer, I highly recommend it: http://www.brandedsocialnetworks.com

phpfox

these sound interesting. if they have well integrated ecommerce for memberships and classifies, plus robust personal groups, that'd be very useful.

ding for handshakes

I've paid $349 for the latest version 2.0. Nice software, good customer service but it's not worth a penny and don't buy it if you really want to make ANY modifications to it. Their website says you can make ANY modifications and their software license is misleading and is misrepresented. After you introduce your new design and spend time on making custom changes, they contact you and tell you to keep their original logo in it's original place and link it to their website on all of your pages.

Don't even try to buy Handshakes

emc2orz - August 15, 2006 - 21:48

Don't even try to buy Handshakes 2.0
They are cheater.

Only very supportive before you make a payment.
Program is not what they said. No language translation, and still keeps logo when I bought a branding-free.
And you have to ask them "how to remove it"

DZOIC sucks!!!!!!!!!!

dings for phpfox

izabi

mwu - August 4, 2006 - 18:28

php izabi says they do not recommend use on a commercial site. too buggy
PHPizabi is beta, many things can change, requiring a fresh install upon upgrading to future beta versions. If you open your izabi site to actual membership, using a beta version, transferring your membership data may be very difficult, possibly impossible, therfore we do not recommend using PHPizabi for commercial use in this stage of development. Experimental use for testing purposes only!

About PHPIZABI

usapmaster - September 15, 2008 - 21:31

You are right about PHPIZABI. The core is free but in order for you to take it to the next level, you have to pay for mods. I knew so because I built one of my sites using PHPIZABI. I ended paying more on the modules than I would have paid for a packaged Social networking CMS.
Currently I am looking to launch another social networking and I heard and read so many things about PHPFOX, Handshakes, e-friends,aroundme, Dolphin, etc, but not quite happy if not hesitant on spending some more, thus i am starting to get my hands dirty trying to understand Drupal. Like the most of us, I would like to have the members to have the ability to customize their profile, and so far, I havent find anything like that being offered by Drupal.
Once i got the hang of Drupal, I am planning to migrate my phpnuke 7.9 site to Drupal. The problem with phpnuke is that there really isnt much member specific interaction, or more personalized profiles.

I would like to add also that it seems the development of PHPIZABI was put in the backburner due to the quarrel between phpizabi.net and phpizabi.com.

For Elgg, i think that it is still behind with some other CMS thats outthere specific for social networknig or at least what am expecting for a social networknig software.
Here at least some of the main features I expect:
1. Blogs
2. Forums
3. Videos (thru 3rdparty or uploads)
4. Photos (with albums)
5. Invite
6. Groups
7. Messaging system
8. Profile customization (including the use of CSS in the profile)

My two sites:

http://www.pinoyhi5.com - This site is in PHPIZABI and with lots of customization.

http://www.usapangpinoy.com - PHPnuke site.

phpfox, handshakes, alcia, etc

All of the softwares above are all waste of time... phpfox code is all messed up and is not effecient. (how do i know cause i started 2 sites with there software.) Handshakes is slow also maybe the cleanest code but encrypted to kingdom come. phpbi is just a waste of time lol.

All in all they may look good but as far as performence and cpu usage they are all worthless.

I am wanting to move to drupal with my sites soon. Looking for a convertor lol

Hi there

I would prefer Drupal out of the list you have there but again that's really user preference in the end, and I have heard many great things about PHPFox in the past, but have no first hand experience.

Good luck

supafunk - April 29, 2007 - 22:31

Don't forget Elgg, it's a well-thought-of open-source social networking script and is definitely worth a look.

To make my contribution to this... I've used phpFox before and agree with the above comment about the code being inefficient, however a recent version of the script has seen some significant changes - though I'm yet to try it out.

Just use Drupal.

netranger - April 30, 2007 - 18:29

I came very close to using Izabi. The only problem there are the mods. Almost every single mob requires $$ Themes also require $$. There are no groups like in drupal, forums sucks. What izabi does have is the sexy factor. Its by far the best looking.

The only problems with drupal from a newbie point of view, are the lack of sexy themes, not newbie friendly, creating user profiles like that of Izabi is not easy at all. In fact, I would say you need to be a pro to be able to do it.

In terms of mods, features, bug free program, large community, free software, helpful community and guides. Drupal owns izabi and fox.

phpizabi

MVPDodo - May 11, 2007 - 09:39

Hi,
I see you're having problems finding the phpizabi community.
There's a dispute right now for phpizabi between Reality medias(phpizabi.net) and MadCow medias(phpizabi.com).
The short story can be found here: Meet The true phpizabi founder.
The phpizabi community is here: The official phpizabi forum
The phpizabi distributions that are on the market right now are still beta but we're planning to fix that.

If you are looking for a free and open source alternative I recommend Aroundme. Elgg will also work but works best on a dedicated server.

What do you mean Free?

Xnomus - November 24, 2007 - 12:18

Phpfox!
The first question likely to come to mind will probably be - What do you mean Free? There are a lot of "free" dating sites all over the internet nowadays, but they are not totally free! These sites force you to pay attention to or spend additional traffic on annoying banners and links. You probably never thought about this, because you have gotten used to it. The internet is overrun with advertising. Wherever you go, advertising pursues you. Just analyze how this advertising influences you.

Well, can`t give it a 5 star rating, but I`m extremely pleased with what`s going on now: 3D City, YouTube, AbleSpace, and much more.. And I`m getting those free of charge. Can`t that be great? Recommended!

I research this for a very long time as far as what the best solution would be. I have looked at all of the above site and I would have to say http://www.elgg.org is by far the most efficient and easiest to mod and theme. Elgg also boast a very very helpful support community. Misja (head of dev for Elgg) is always respond and helping new users config and mod.

You can also look into http://www.peopleAggregator.com it is a open source software as long as it is no used for commercial use. It is probably the most eye appealing with closest functionality to myspace.

Before going ahead and plunging your heart and soul into this I would make sure you don't whore your self and try and be a myspace. I find that site to be terrible confusing and offers alot of crap to the user. But they are almost 300,000,000 strong so I guess I am one of the few.

Remember you can put some time in and learn how Drupal works (it takes a commitment). Not only Drupal but there are alot of other opensource CMS's plone.org, joomla, mambo, phpnuke. But IMO Drupal offers the most customization.

Handshakes is a great platform for building social networks

trekr67 - June 17, 2008 - 19:02

Handshakes is a great platform to build social networks. It is easy to install, comes with free unlimited support and is completely customizable and modular allowing you to add features or remove them as you see fit. One interesting feature for Handshakes sites is the ability for members to save their searches and get notified when new members match their search criteria. Another feature that members like is the ability to update their Wordpress blogs and Handshakes profiles with one entry simultaneously, something that a lot of other platforms don't offer.

Dzoic Handshakes

giorgio79 - September 14, 2008 - 09:46

Hi specialt,

If you want to get a quick and scalable solution targeted directly at social networks than go for Dzoic Handshakes. I am running 3 sites off of it, (and have one extra license for sale, if interested pm me) It is open source, and if you are comfortable with smarty or savant templates it is easy to customize the look and feel. Even the functionality can be extended with a little php knowledge.

I have one site on Drupal as well, but I am not sure if is ready yet for a social network that can have a couple hundred users online at any time. It has some nice mods like buddylist 2, user profile and advanced forum which are necessary, but are yet to reach a mature stage. Even though they are getting there. Currently I run it for the site in my sig, which is more a static site where users can watch videos.

Hope that helps.

cheers,
G
