First step to improving the UI for the module is I'd like to split the current admin/build/path/pathauto page into admin/build/path/patterns and admin/build/path/settings (same respective changes for admin/config/search/path in D7).

Makes sense for me. However, it may be good to see + re-evaluate this after the batch API patch landed? (which introduces a "Bulk update" tab)
