First, this module appears to have great potential, thank you for the contribution.

My requirement is to select the forum topic at the time of posting rather than have it preset. As far as I can see this is not possible at the moment.

Am I missing something? Is there a workaround?

I think the idea of the first author was to create one specific forum for discussions created from a set of pages.

This being said, I would think there is no reason that we couldn't offer the user a way to choose a forum and the list of forums could be limited to a specified set.

I won't have much time right now though... can you submit a patch by any chance? If so, I'd give you some pointers.
