Top posters in X time - excluding certain taxonomy?

Is there a way to get the top posters view to display
- top posters in the last week or month?

- top posters not counting posts in a particular forum (taxonomy filter)?

I guess the gist here is am I overlooking a method for filtering top posters in relation to things like nodes and taxonomy? It doesn't appear to be possible.

I've got a block snippet based solution partly implemented (it filters based on number of days), but I'm wondering if there is a way to harness User Stats to do this more effectively with or without Views?
