Form modification

in search of a module to modify forms without having to write a custom module implementing hook_form_alter() I found 3 modules which do they more or less the same thing in different ways:

http://drupal.org/project/formfilter (Actually you have to write code here)

Anyone can share some experience on using one of these? Shouldn´t they be merged into one single module?
