Stuff like these ( http://www.doknowevil.net/litebox/ ) image effects have been floating around for some time. it loos nice, degardes good and might be bloated UI wise but does a good job of running and image slideshow.
it looks like just a couple of lines of code to implement this. any takers?

filled under wrong project and there already is such a feature. clocing
