Advanced Aggregator Module

leemchildress - July 5, 2006 - 15:34

I just recently got serious about Drupal after leaving Joomla ... Drupal rocks!!!

The only feature I am disappointed in (and probably just because of my needs, not because of the module) is the aggregator module.

I would like an aggregator similar to Joomla's in that the aggregator block shows the link (which links back to the news supplier) ALONG WITH the text supplied with that link. Joomla allowed for (and were able to customize the choices) the display of the name of the syndicator, their logo image if supplied, and images related to the news feature. I really do not want my readers to click on a link, simply to be taken to another local page to read one line of text and have to again click on a link to be taken to the full story.

Since I know I have a tendency to ramble, maybe I should show graphically what I want.

A block which shows:

-- Name of Syndicator (if option selected) --
-- Image of Syndicator (if option selected) --

-- image with story --
-- link to full story at syndicator site --
-- text supplied by syndicator --

-- link to full story at syndicator site--
-- text supplied by syndicator --

-- link to full story at syndicator site --
-- text supplied by syndicator --

...

End Block

The number of links should be selectable too (which is how it is now)

Is there such a module out there, or is someone out there able to edit the aggregator module to do that? I am proficient with php, but need to learn the mechanics of Drupal yet.

Thanks to anyone who can offer some insight. Sorry I was so "wordy" in this post.

should be possible

i haven't tried the aggregator module yet, but on the Drupal site itself, there is the page with aggregator content:

http://drupal.org/planet

which seems to be along the lines of what you want. So, the trick is to get outplus like this into a block, right? If no one has a better suggestion, I'd try looking at the aggregator module code and finding the relevant function that generates this page view. A version of that PHP could be put into a custom block.

It's possible

I set it up two days ago and it is no problem to set it up like that, or do I miss something or don't understand your question correctly?
Have a look. If this is how you would like it to be, it is made with 4.7.2 and the included aggregator mod.

But one thing I still miss: I would like to tag the feed items. Is there a way to do it?

Pretty Close

Can you outline what modifications u had to make?

I will try to

funana - July 5, 2006 - 21:28

I just installed it and configured the menu. I changed the Name from Aggregator to Newsroom and disabled the displaying of "sources". Via Operations/Edit I let it display expanded. That's all.

Aggregator2

SimonP - July 5, 2006 - 21:49

It might be worth looking at the Aggregator 2 module which can turn news feed items into nodes which might give you what you want.

Not Aggregator2 but maybe Node Aggregator

funana - July 6, 2006 - 08:37

Hi Simon,

I tried the Aggregator2 module, but it really was pain in da a**. It didnt refresh the Feeds via cron and the tags didnt work (which maybe was an effect caused by tagalicous... i dont know). I found a lot of reported bugs for that mod and I decided to delete it before I run into serious problems.

I found the new Aggregator Node Module and will give it try today!

Thanks for your help!

neither working

funana - July 6, 2006 - 09:29

Damn. The Node Aggregator didnt work and the A2 neither...

Both of them display a simmilar Error Message:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: form_checkbox() in /home/www/doc/xxxxx/mypage.org/www/modules/aggregator2_logo.module on line 68

The Node Aggregator showed an error with "form_checkbox()" too.

That's an indication that

venkat-rk - July 6, 2006 - 11:06

That's an indication that the module hasn't been updated to use the new FormsAPI for 4.7. If you have coding skills, may be you could consider chipping in to update the module. You have probably seen the developer docs at http://api.drupal.org

Thanx alot

Oh, thanks alot Ramdak, but I am not a good developer... I will wait for a solution or maybe try to solve the problem later and share it. God, I love this community here... I'm so lucky about my decision to switch to drupal for my projects :-)

A2 works but...

kirkcaraway - July 6, 2006 - 20:31

I installed Aggregator 2 and it seems to work fine. But it still has the same problem of not linking directly to the RSS item, so you have to go to another local page before you get the link out.

I am working with A2 just

How Do I Get Aggregator Node Not To Post To Front Page

aventurer - July 9, 2006 - 07:22

I installed the Aggregator Node module. It is working, but currently it posts all items to the front page of my web site. I would like it to post to one or more specific pages that I specify. How do I configure it to do this? Also, how do I get it not to post to the front page?

Thanks

Home Ownership Community

Go to administer>>settings,

venkat-rk - July 10, 2006 - 04:15

Go to administer>>settings, look for the aggregator node link, then click on its configuration link and turn off the option that promotes it by default to the front page. If you have admin permissions, you can still override this setting.

As for making it appear on specific pages, I am not really sure where you would control this as the aggregator nodes get published automatically on cron runs, if I understand correctly. Someone else might be able to help you on this.

Thanks

Question

animeh - August 11, 2006 - 03:38

Hi, I am trying to set up a page that displays, side-by-side, two different feeds from many sites of different categories. Does that make sense? I guess not. I want my homepage to have two big column's down the middle, for example:

Linux feeds from different sources | Windows feeds from different sources

so that there are two columns, the left one filled with feeds from the Linux category and the right one filled with the Windows category. Any ideas on how I can do this?

Please help soon.. i have all my feeds in the aggregator under the proper categories but i can't figure out how to do it.

Thanks in advance.

yes you can do that...

ckeo - August 11, 2006 - 04:13

use the panels module or a combination of the panels and views module.
I used it on my site to display a listing of all feed items... but im thinking you could filter it by category or something.

Craig.

Aggregator needs more customizability

garywiz - September 2, 2006 - 06:36

I agree with this post entirely. There are some great aggregation sources, and we're really having trouble integrating these sources into our site in a way which enhances the user experience. I want to be able to control where the links go, and have better control over filtering incoming rss feeds.

For example, Google News is a great way to build aggregated news blocks for special topics related to a site. But, try it. It's on our scubalot.com site right now, but I don't know how long I'll keep it. The default aggregator creates some pretty awful pages and forces users to leave the site, often in confusion. Plus, it doesn't properly interpret XML entities.

Sure, you can replace functions in the template. Sure, you can start hacking stylesheets to try to change what you see. But, this really should be a core enhancement.

Anyone working on this? I'd love to get involved and do some work on it.
