After having installed the i18n module, the user is not directed any more to the page defined in the front_page setting according to the user's role but to the home path instead.
This problem might be similar to the one reported for the path_redirect module reported here http://drupal.org/node/249432 .

Implementing the hook suggested in http://drupal.org/node/389570 solved my problem.
