I just checked out localize.staging.drupal.org and I get lots of stuff to translate, but most of that is from Drupal 5.x modules. I'd like to help out, but I don't want to waste time on unused 5.x modules (or even on used 5.x modules for that matter ;)

You can currently filter by module and *then* by version. So you can limit your translation to certain versions of certain modules. For an overall major version filter (so you can work on translations of stuff for 6.x across modules), this request is a duplicate of the existing #627838: Add core compatibility version filter.
