I believe the [weblink:node_id] or [weblink:node_id/link_id] can be used with any node type (with related links), not just the weblink type. However, currently the weblink module must be enabled to use this feature.

I suggest that the input filter be moved to the links.module or to it's own module to remove the unnecessary dependency on the weblink.module.

Pardon my careless use of "weblink module" ... I actually intended to refer to links_weblink.module.
