So I took my site offline for maintenance, however when I go to the /?q=user directory and try and log-in, I get an error pop-up that says:

[ajax.module: An unknown error has occurred.}

My knowledge on programing is very poor and only know basic stuff in linux, but if anyone can give me some help that would be most appreciated!

Since it's an "unknown error", it's kinda unknown what the error is :-)
AJAX is the javascript that autocompletes your tags, and does other things.

Maybe you could give some more information about what you changed during the maintenance?
Did you change some modules? Change your theme? Does the error also occur on other pages?
