I wonder if the line #36 in the twitter.lib.php file "protected $source = 'drupal';" is the source of this and a "Protected Source" needs to be registered with Twitter and that is where the "via Drupal" language comes from?
If you have a preexisting source set up with Twitter from before they started offering OAuth you can modify the code be replacing 'drupal' with your source parameter. However the only way to get a custom source now is by using OAuth. Check out the 3.x version of this module.

seabrawk commentedThis probably isn't exactly what you want, but you can uncheck the "Set source to Drupal when updating Twitter status" in "Twitter setup."
This will then display posts as "via API" instead of "via Drupal"
