Is there any way that we can allow the user to save a node without sending it to the moderation queue so that they can come back and edit it later and when it is finished they can send it to the moderator?

I'm not sure how that would work - would it be unpublished? Sounds like you need some more advanced workflow module.

I was thinking that somehow there could be another stage in all of it.

Currently we have the submit button that puts the new content into moderation. Maybe the form could be altered to have a "Save to Work in Progress" button that puts it into another step like "unpublished - work in progress" and keep the original button that the module provides "Save to Moderation Queue".

It's just that if there are people that work on their stuff online rather than on their local computer there could be a whole bunch of stuff that has been saved and put into moderation that doesn't belong there.
