Good question, I'm looking for a drop down menu system myself. There is also the Shortcuts module, which attempts to reduce the JS-reliance of Jsdomenu -> http://drupal.org/node/43900 (http://drupal.org/node/67186 for 4.7 conversion).

Shortcuts is quick but it's main issue - it can't be used in the header (First level - horizontal menu).

I found that nice_menus.module is much more better.
