Similar to http://drupal.org/node/393632, could we maybe add a further $extra_class[] to menu items with a count of the menu item number in function menu_tree_output()?

It'd be really helpful for further theming of menu items.

This isn't requested enough to make it to core. It can be done in contrib/custom module.
