Issue Summary
The changes that were made from #352180: Better, multi-site friendly "www." addition/removal in .htaccess break subdomains in sites that rewrite their url to include the www.
Example server setup:
www.example.com
sub1.example.com rewrites to www.sub1.example.com
sub2.example.com rewrites to www.sub2.example.com

we should get a good solution for D7 first and then backport to D6. Let's keep the discussion in the same initial thread: #352180: Better, multi-site friendly "www." addition/removal in .htaccess
