I am having trouble installing jQuery / jQuery UI. I (finally) figured out that I need jQuery in addition to jQuery UI, but things are not going well. It seems the JavaScript files are not where Drupal and jQuery UI are expecting them to be. Please tell me where they should be. I have tried sites/all/modules and sites/default/modules. For example, I put jquery-1.4.2.min.js at /sites/default/modules/js/jquery-1.4.2.min.js. And, I have jquery-1.2.6.min.js at /sites/all/modules/jquery_ui/jquery.ui/jquery-1.2.6.min.js. I can keep trying things and I expect I will chance on to the correct location, but a direct and clear how-to would be appreciated. Please ignore my confusion. I don't feel good right now.

srobert72 commentedDon't update JQuery directly in Drupal release directories.
Use JQuery_Update module : http://drupal.org/project/jquery_update
jQuery Update 6.x-1.x: jQuery 1.2.x (currently 1.2.6)
jQuery Update 6.x-2.x: jQuery 1.3.x (currently 1.3.2)
I tried to upgrade manually JQuery_Update with JQuery 1.4.2. But Views UI doesn't work anymore.
See #685060: Get ready for 1.4
So you can just upgrade to JQuery 1.3.2 for the moment. Use jQuery Update 6.x-2.x module.

I am closing this issue to clean up the issue queue. Feel free to reopen the issue if there is new information and the problem still resides. If not please make sure you close your issues that you don't need any more.
Maybe you can get support from the local user group. Please take a look at this list at groups.drupal.org.
