Limited filters on Facebook-style Status Views

I recently installed the Facebook-style status module. I have several different groups of users on my site, and I'd like to build views so that all users of a common role can see each others' statuses. (For example, a teacher would see only other teachers' statuses, while a student would only see other students' statuses.) I don't want users to have to "friend" each other -- I want them to see all the statuses of everyone else within their role.

However, when I tried to edit the filters in the Facebook-style Status view, the available filters were limited, and I couldn't filter by role.

I tried to build a view from scratch, choosing "node" rather than "Facebook-style status update" as the view type. However, here, the Facebook-style status filters weren't available.

Any idea how to get the functionality I need?
