We removed the dependency on Token for the D7 version, but I think we'll have to add it back as Token in D7 contrib will be responsible for:
1. Providing a good token UI browser if it doesn't make it into core (likely) in addition to a token autocompletion
2. Providing re-usable functions to check for invalid tokens.
3. Providing missing tokens (Fields, Profile, Node's first term, etc)

Seem reasonable?

I ran tests against this patch on my local install without token installed, and got the same errors. After installing token, all tests passed. So I think this is just an issue with the testing framework on d.o and not an actual problem with the patch.
