what are the advantages and disadvantages of this module (+fileframework) over using something like alfresco and the cmis integration module?

The biggest difference is that with Alfresco you will have a complete file system. You can access this file system not just from the web. You can save files to it directly via Windows/Mac files explorer. You can save files directly from MS Word.

There are also things like revision control, file previewing, work flow control. You can even set up automated file transformation from MS Word to PDF in Alfresco.
