Hi, I really want to use Drupal instead of Wordpress as a CMS for my next project because what the client wants is of a bigger scope than is possible with wp as a cms. I really like how quickly it is to get up and running with wp as a cms, but then it feels a bit hacky to get the whole thing streamlined e.g. with regards to plugin customisation etc.
Anyway, my point is that there are some simple plugins for wp and I want the similar functionality for the drupal site (I've got drupal installed and run through some tuts to build a simple cms so I'm past that stage)
Equivalent for drupal of the following wp plugins:
dynamic content switcher
follow us social icons
category posts
pixopoint drop down menu plugin
flickr photos
all in one SEO
Where do I go to find modules for drupal. It seems easier to find tutorials and plugins for wordpress.
Sorry for the vagueness. I'm just getting started. I think drupal looks great and I'm committed to learning it. I'm an intermediate level php programmer but I'm lazy so I would like to know what stuff is already out there for me to use!
THanks
andy

To some of us, "wp" stands for "wordperfect," and we therefore could use some description of the various modules you have listed. What does "category posts" do, for example? Supplying such information would allow us to more easily find the drupal module with comparable functionality.

drupal modules
Hi,
sorry, I meant Wordpress
in wordpress I would have blog posts and blog post categories then on the front page I want to display the top 2 most recent blog posts in the category of events and of latest news for example.
In wordpress I could do a custom call on the database or there is a plugin called category posts which does this.
How would I achieve the same effect in Drupal.
It's a very simple question but very useful!
-----
As for SEO, I think that would probably be built in, but the SEO all in one Wordpress plugin provides a one stop shop for meta tags and stuff and can use blog post tags as meta keywords, stuff like that. It's a nice plugin. I think it comes with default wordpress installs.

Thanks
Andy
...
just wondering, but did you actually see my post? I've pretty much answered your quest to SEO modules...
Drupal's category system (Taxonomy) is far more complex than Wordpress' - as well as it's content type implementation is also useful, as you'd have two different content types for your example, the default Story is a basic news content type, and then you could use CCK (Content Construction Kit) and the Date or Event module to create an event content type.
And with Views, you can create all sorts of different displays of your content, the possibilities here are near endless, including a custom frontpage view as well as views displayed as blocks...
drupal modules
Hi tdimg
I did see it but I was just saying what that particular plugin was.
Thanks very much for your answer, I will check it out shortly.
...
it wasn't one particular module, it's a whole set of modules that cater for many SEO aspects. Nodewords for example handles meta keywords & descriptions, "Page title" enables you to change the output of the default page title - both features I think the Wordpress Plugin you mentioned also cover.

I know you meant wordpress, I was only trying to convey to you the extent of my unfamiliarity with it.
Sorry for the confusion. ;-)
We still need descriptions of these modules' functionality:
--dynamic content switcher
--follow us social icons
--pixopoint drop down menu plugin
--flickr photos

no worries!
dynamic content switcher. -- here is an example of the wordpress plugin:- http://www.featuredcontentgallery.com/
There are many jquery slideshows etc, I wondered if they was a bespoke thing similar to the above for drupal.
As the other contributor said, I can just use the images for the social icons, however there is a nice plugin for wordpress that has many of the existing social network badges already included.
I will send a mail to the developer of the pixopoint drop down menu plugin for wordpress. Basically its a suckerfish dropdown. Reasonably straightforward to do it manually, but again I wondered if there was any plugin that does it
as tdimg said:
pixopoint drop down menu plugin
maybe http://drupal.org/project/nice_menus?
I will check this out, and all look through the modules in a bit more details.
Thanks!
Both rotor banner and dynamic
Both rotor banner and dynamic block are similar to dynamic content switcher (there are other modules as well).
...
rather than tell us the WP plugins, can you tell us their functionality?

Just get a free icon pack and do a custom block with links to them. I might've seen a module for this though.
Do spent some time searching for modules, Drupal's search is not that bad you know. You can filter by type, and a module is type "project". Also, you've got Drupalmodules.com which also provides a related modules block on the right - not always accurate though.

Actually drupal modules are pretty easy to find, they're just about all located at http://drupal.org/project/Modules. There's also drupalmodules.com which has a more user friendly search, but the catalog of modules is the same. Occasionally, you might stumble across modules located elsewhere, usually related to an integration with a 3rd party app, but that's very rare.

Hi,
I know about these, however, I was talking specifically about a block that allowed you to show a bunch of social media icons. I can do it manually. I'll create a custom blokc.
Thanks
