Currently the og2list module has the sender as the reply-to for outgoing nodes/commetns that turn into emails. This should probably default to the group address (maybe be configurable) so that replies via email are tracked online.

we currently don't set any reply-to, your MUA uses the From header as the mail address to reply to. The From address is set to the author's mail address.

There is a debate whether or not to set the reply-to. If you want to post a patch to set this in the UI then we can work on Perl side of things to set the Reply-to if the UI value is set.

I understand how the system works now, but for most uses of this tool people will want replies to posts to be tracked by the system, meaning mail-in.pl needs to get them, meaning either setting the sender or reply-to headers to be the list address. Setting the sender is non-ideal because people like to see who a message is from.

I think the useful default is for the emails to be sent such that follow ups generated on email become part of the discussion thread in the og-forum. In a perfect world, you could configure this on a per-group basis just like you can on a per-list basis in most email list tools. Is there an appropriate place to put these kinds of per-group settings? I'd rather write a patch for this than for a single system-wide set_variable() thing.

Would it be ok to expand the og2list_groups table to contain a setting for this?

I actually think this is a great idea... i.e., that the Reply-To should be the List Address... or at least there should be an option to set it as such.

A couple of supporting reaons.

(1) Currently, as og2list is setup, people who receive the mail might think you're simply sending them "normal email" rather than a "group forum posting"... so they won't know that other people in the group have already received the message. And might needlessly forward the message on to other group members.

(2) those servers which are performing an SMTP callback in order to verify email addresses, will be able to verify them [I think] more easily, if Reply-To is a List Address, rather than one embedded with a VERP. [At least I hope so :-) ] [See also http://drupal.org/node/80520]

Title: Set Reply-To In Outgoing Content Mails to List Address » Set Reply-To In Outgoing Content Mails to List Address & Amend Subject Line to include [LISTNAME]

In addition to being able to set the reply-to as the list address (should be default wtih flag to turn it off if you ask me), I also believe that we should be able to customize the Subject to include a [LISTNAME] portion to it - that is what Mailman does (and Yahoo Groups) and helps distinguish list emails from other personal emails in people's mailboxes.

ok, let's implement these features.

Each list can now have an admin-configurable subject prefix for outgoing messages. Will be stripped for incoming messages.

Thanks guys, this is awesome. :-)

Well, I might have spoken too soon...

For some reason I can't seem to get the new 'prefix' field to be saved. That is, even though I enter in the information into the 'prefix' form and click "Submit", it doesn't get saved into the og2list_groups table.

I'll try to take another look tomorrow...

********Now, this having been said, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better, anyhow, just to use the og2list_groups "recipient" field as the forced default prefix, instead of adding another column to the og2list_groups table...

Setting the default prefix as the "recipient field" would seem to cover pretty much every use case I can imagine ...

In particular,
(1) I can't see a situation in which you wouldn't want to have your "prefix" also be the actual "recipient" listname.
(2) I can't see a situation in which you wouldn't want a list to automatically have "[LISTNAME]" in the subject header.

If someone can think of a situation in which this is not the case, I'd be interested.

PS. I also think the other issue of "Set Reply-To" is probably even more important, long term... :-)

Thanks for all your hard work and hope this is helpful feedback. :-)

Best,
Albert

I've fixed the "prefix" part. Actually, some UI for the "reply-to" thing did slip in, but that doesn't work yet.

Wow that was fast! Thanks!! :-)

This is globally configurable for OG2list in mail.conf. Most people want it to default to reply to list so we won't do per list configuration for now.

Needs testing and then moved to fixed and closed.

ajwwong’s picture

sorry I can't help out with testing right now... my exim kinda exploded... :-( hope to be back on track in a little bit.

The list prefix is working just fine.

The reply-to does not seem to be. In version:

$Id: mail-out.pl,v 1.36 2006/09/06 00:17:10 killes Exp $

I set "$set_reply_to = 1", but still see the user's e-mail address as the sender. Some other setting in mail-out.pl that needs to be set to make this take effect?

there is a global switch in mail.conf which you can set to implement "reply-to" for all lists. I am marking this fixed. Please create anew issues for more similar features.
