- 11/06/09 - Site down for roughly 20min. I figured this was a fluke and gave them another chance.
- 2/18/10 - Site down. Since I was at a tradeshow, I couldn't follow the issue. The site was unavailable for about an hour
- 3/04/10 - Site down. Over 3 hours of downtime.
- March 2010 - Database server exploited. Every database password on the Grid-Service on needs to be changed.
- 3/22/10 - Site down. Contacted support and they needed to have a "a staff member who is better equipped to service your needs" look at the issue. This has been on going since this morning (multiple hours)
I requested an up-time guarantee, like many hosting companies provide, and they will not offer it or any other solution to ease this down-time pain.
I recommend avoiding MediaTemple like it's the plague.

I work at Drupar.com
agreed
I use to recommend Media Temple to all my clients, but I will not do so ever again. The recent database server exploit and subsequent password change is not the first. It happened back in November too.
an alternate point of view
I run a dozen or so Drupal sites at Media Temple. I've had mostly good experiences with them. Most of my problems have been self-inflicted.
Totally Agree
I signed up about 8-9 months ago and had also signed up many clients. I've had the exact same problems that Philbar had. At least once a month there's a pretty substantial outage, hack or latency problems with the MySQL smartpool.
MT used to boast 99.xx% uptime on their website. I notice they've taken that down now probably because the uptime has dropped considerably. Anyway, I can only comment on the Grid Service shared hosting, is really unreliable and expensive considering the $20/month price tag and the massive amounts of downtime/outages.
Also, what's the use of quick support times if they don't help with anything?
Downtime is the killer for me, I'm looking for other hosts if anyone has any recommendations. Thanks
The Grid is a Fraud and a a Failure
The grid service (gs) at Media Temple is basically shared hosting warmed over that comes out of the oven with 87-93% uptime, major security issues, huge (3-5s+) SQL latency, slow and often unhelpful support. Add an SQL container and move to a newer cluster with fewer users and latency will drop to 1-2s or better--for a while. You'll be paying $35-40/mo. for far worse service than you would get from the cheapest $2-5 shared hosting.
I was a grid customer since 2008 and finally pulled out 2 accounts there. One more to go. Earlier this year I wrote in detail about the latency and uptime problems with logs and graphs to illustrate both: http://www.newlocalmedia.com/blog/107-host-review-media-temple.html
I have heard little that's bad about their other offerings, but they also seem overpriced, subject to the same, slow, snotty "customer service," and I just don't trust a company that tolerates and tries to mask devastating failure.
They have promised the "cluster service (cs)" as a replacement for the (gs) since 2008 and I bet they will soon be adding another year to the "coming soon!" notice on their site. Don't be fooled.
