Category module doesn't work with tagadelic

With Category module installed, I can't get any of the tagadelic functions to work. There is nothing rendered in any tagadelic block. There are no errors reported.

This is the case whether working with a newly created site or on a site where taxonomy has been converted to Category.

I'm assuming this is wrapper module problem, since tagadelic works fine on a site using drupal's core taxonomy module.

I've found this Tag Cloud code/module which does work with the Category Module, but it is very simple and has none of the fine-ness that Tagadelic has. I've looked at the code, but I can't (again, I'm not that high on the PHP food chain) see how one might point me to a solution to the other.

Could someone see if there is a trick in the Tag Cloud (term_popular) code that might point the way forward to Category support in Tagadelic (or vice versa)?
