Trying to access a non-existence file inside the css subdirectory with the generated .htaccess, e.g. http://localhost/sites/default/files/css/non-existence , wont produce a 404 error -- the front page is shown instead.

Adding this line to the .htaccess file seems to help:
ErrorDocument 404 default

CSS Gzip will no longer be updated/supported. All future development is being done in the Advanced CSS/JS Aggregation module.
