that in Drupal-4.6 a search on a mask worked and in 4.7 finds nothing
interestingly that on a digital mask for example 24*05 - he searches and in a letter - no

wildcard search

According to http://drupal.org/node/62636 the wildcard search was dropped intentionally in drupal 4.7. You should use stemming (http://drupal.org/project/porterstemmer) in stead. The thread also has a patch that makes wildcard searching possible.
