There seems to be no way to deny access to the original image using private file systems.
Deny access to the original image overrides preset access.
Any other method allows access to the original file.

I forked the thing. using these patches and my own addition posted here: http://drupal.org/node/809184
And coded a protection module with tha forked ic version. But that could never be contributed because i think those patches won´t be integrated.
