I've been creating a theme in Druapl 6 for a little while now, and so far, I've been working with a blank template.php file. So far this hasn't caused any real problems, but lately, as I've encountered issues in setting up my site, I've looked to the forums and seen a lot of things like "add this code to your template.php file". Can I just add code like this to the blank file and have it work fine? Or do I actually need something in there first? And if so, is there a book page anywhere on this site to guide me through the essentials required of a basic template.php file? All the pages I've found so far have been regarding editing an existing one, but not creating one from scratch with everything I need in it.
