I would also like to see this feature request implemented.
ALT text should be optional. on/off configurable from the field creation page.
It seems to me that having title text field in the imagefield duplicates the point of having CCK text fields a bit.
I don't know anything about CCK/imagefield implementation but could it be possible to have alt text/title text a pointer to CCK text fields instead of embedded in this field?
I think it's reasonable to have alt text and title optional; since, I think, most of the people just want to insert an image and could be confusing in complex CCK form to have this. Maybe, in case admin set those fields has optional, node title could be set as alt text.

dopry commentedI made the fields dealt to filename, and users can enable 'custom' alt and title fields individually... but they are optional now.
