It always happens. I go on vacation and the server crashes. This time, after the crash, dozens of images are missing; there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to which ones are missing.
Anyone else lose any content lately?

thumbnails
Often thumbnails get deleted on my site and it drives me crazy because it will either show the original and screw up my layout, or just not show the posting at all.
I've posted here, but haven't heard anything: http://drupal.org/node/75504
Custom sized images disappear at random
I have a fairly new Drupal 4.7.2 site on an Oxford University server. I use image and img_assist (plus drupalimage within TinyMCE) to place inline images in page content.
If I specify a custom image size for, say, picture.jpg, a custom image with the filename picture.img_assist_custom.jpg is generated, and I can see it on the server in files/images/. From time to time, after anything from a day to a month or so, these have a tendency to disappear from the pages and from files/images/. Not all at once, just one or two at a time, so far as I can tell. It seems to happen more often now the site has gone live and is busier.
I've not had a problem with full-size images, or thumbnails, as far as I can tell. I'm working around the problem by uploading alternative copies of the images that I can use at full size, but I'd be interested to hear from others, too, especially if they know why it might happen.

Files deleted when I view image gallery
I can add to this comment now. I've been watching the files/images directory in my ftp client while I do various things in the site.
Viewing an image gallery sometimes creates new thumbnails. Can't see why it should do this when the thumbnail aleady exists, but it does. On two occasions files got deleted at the same time. Once, six replacement thumbnails were created, and six files deleted. Two of the deleted files were custom-size versions of the images for which new thumbnails were made. Wasn't able to tell what the other four were, but possibly they were other derivative versions of thse files that I wasn't tracking. The second time, one thumbnail was re-created, and the custom size version of this image was deleted.
I'm beginning to get the picture, but it's not good news for my pages with custom-sized images in them.
