I concur that this is a useful feature, and will consider it for the future, but it's not release-critical. :-)

Yes, there is. Quite simply, it was after midnight and I was out of time and energy. :-) The last release included some significant bug fixes, and I didn't want to delay getting it out the door. Also, there was one very large contributed patch that added a lot of new features, and I wanted to get that one committed sooner because if I waited too long the code would change to the point where it wouldn't work any more. If I have to do manual merges, I want them to be small rather than large.

This feature is definitely on my short list, and should be in the CVS main trunk within the next couple of days, possibly as early as tonight if my schedule goes well today. Sorry for the delay.
