Having just bought an iPad, and intending to use it instead of a laptop for short trips and smaller events, I was wondering if there's any way image fields could be supported for adding images from my iPhone or iPad's built in photo library directly.

Right now, the only solution I can think of is to use an FTP client to upload the photo from my image library, then insert it using IMCE or another browser into the actual node. It'd be amazing if I could attach a photo to a node straight on the node edit form; most everything else on the form works fine so far, except for some WYSIWYG functionality.

Hmm... Looking at this (http://www.experts-exchange.com/Apple/Hardware/iPhone/Q_24749034.html), it looks like that's a negative, and I'll have to set up an FTP solution for this problem... However, has anyone heard whether any new version of mobile safari will support the file upload form element?

Yeah, afaik, the iPhone OS (which powers iPod Touch, iPhones, and iPads) doesn't support HTML file fields at all because it doesn't have any mechanism for selecting a file. Can you send an e-mail with an attachment from an iPhone/Pad, or send a Skype/iChat attachment? I'm honestly asking here because I don't have either device, but my guess is that all of these things are inter-related. Safari's JavaScript support is excellent, so I don't think there's any compatibility problems there. It's just a limitation of the OS right now. Chance are though, this will be accommodated for in the iPhone OS 4, which comes out this summer. http://www.apple.com/iphone/preview-iphone-os/

I see. I can't attach something to an email from within the mail app, but the photos app (and other apps) can push a photo into an email as an attachment somehow... we'll see with OS4 if this is going to be resolved.

I can see the form correctly, but the 'browse' button is grayed out on the iPad and iPhone both :(

I'll have to resort to FTP for now, I guess.

Take heart:

I think the "Photo Library Access" API is exactly what you're looking for, I'd say there's a very high chance of uploading from Safari using this this API.

For the time being, I'm marking this fixed as a support request, since there's nothing we can do on our side.

Ah - thanks for the update... there is hope!

I have 0S 4 and it appears it's still not here. This is a massive killer for a project I'm working on :( Anybody else working on solutions?

Here's one possible solution:

And also, you might want to try using mimerouter and mailhandler to post via email... that has worked okay for me.
