I was thinking it would be nice to have this module have the ability to character/word count up if there is no limit to the message. Also maybe a pernode overall character/word count so if multiple fields are using this feature it would count up/down using the total of all associated maxlength fields. And heck if that was implemented maybe a way to limit the node as a whole...

Just a couple ideas at this point.

I had a request for a count up as well, though not with max length empty. Here is a patch that will add count up functionality.

Here is the patch created off of the most recent version maxlength-6.x-2.0-beta1. This will add count up functionality to the module.

The Drupal 6 version of Maxlength is no longer supported so I'm marking this Closed (works as designed).

I also encourage you, if you haven't already, to upgrade your site to Drupal 8/9. We are actively maintaining that version and you would enjoy all of the other features of the latest version of Drupal.
