Hi,

Don't have the ability to use clean urls (fasthosts), so using autopath instead.

I notice theres still a '=?whatever_the_title_is' does google like the =? (or at least not hate it!?)

I have a whole load of pages I'm looking to transfer, if I know that google likes it and it wont be a waste of time!...

Hello,

I'm not sure I understand your message : pathauto (I assume that's what you mean by "autopath" ;-)) and clean urls are 2 different - although related - things :

The 2 can be combined or used separately.

Now to answer your question, I'd say it's removing the "?q=" part that helps with Google.

Some people say having explicit words in the URL helps but I'm really not sure it does : have a look at the Google PR of the pages on the Drupal website : most of them don't have path aliases and look something like http://drupal.org/node/6548 but they have an excellent PR.

Good luck,
Vincent

If I can't get clean urls what impact does this have on google?

Will pages still be indexed with the '?='?

Is there anything I can do to activate them when I don't have access to the http.conf (or whatever it is) in Apache?

I'm no SEO expert so I'm not sure how exactly it will affect your site's ranking, but what I know is your pages WILL get indexed with the "?q=". There are plenty of them in Google's index already.

As to how to implement clean URLs, I can't help, I had my webhost take care of that.

Sure,
Pathauto and clean URL can make a big difference in Google search.
I tried it myself in http://www.egjug.org
also the SiteMap and GSiteMap

I have made several "test" sites, and I fear that google has banned the content because it only indexes the index page, none of the other pages. have i made a terrible mistake and produced a lot of duplicate content that can be considered to be a 'link farm'? is any of the damage that i did do reversible?

i now have robots.txt disallowed for all of the nodes. not sure if that will reinstate my status, but i do have gsite module and pathauto running. is it bad to have gsite running and making a lot of submissions on each chron?

thanks for the advice..

can i ask if you find a solution to this?

i also built different test sites in sub-folders of my main domain (ex: mydomain/test-site) and on different domain names i do not use (ex: otherdomain.com/drupal) and am fearing the same thing because only my main homepage gets indexed, nothing more except the old test-site pages...

please, any advice greatly apreciated!
