I think it would be a great feature to show a captcha only if there is a link in the post.

This is similar to what stackoverflow does.

I recommend to check out http://drupal.org/project/mollom , which provides CAPTCHA protection after text analysis (more advanced that just simple detecting if there is a url in the post).

Yes, but mollom is a proprietary service.

I think link detection is good enough.
