I am trying to setup a genealogy site using the Family Tree Module where I plan on importing over 3000 individuals that I have researched. Since the family tree consist of so many different families contacted to me but not all are connected to each other I would like the site to have it set up in groups using the Organic Group Module so each individual person will only have limited access to his immediate family.

What I would like to have on the site is each individual should be able to access all his ancestors as well as his ancestor’s siblings and their children down to individuals who are his/her second cousins. Unless permission are given to see even further

For instance I should be able to view only my great grandparent’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren which will only give me access to see my second cousins. But I should be able to see the descendents of my grandparents up to another generation which will be my children’s second cousins and so forth.

I would also like to have family events, calendar etc to be available for the appropriate groups.

Can someone please guide me how I can set up the it up.

Don't want you to think I'm just blowing you off, but your best bet would be to check out the IRC (chat) support area. I personally don't have as much experience with OG as others do, and I don't want to give you inaccurate information. Not to mention I'd have to treat the issue as 'commercial' which is done outside the drupal.org realm...

However I can suggest you try this:

  • After enabling the module, go to example.com/admin/content/types
  • Click edit next to a family node type (individual, group, location)
  • Below where it says Organic groups, try selecting Standard group post (typically only author may edit).

Thanks for your help I did what you suggested and its not working fully. I set up my fathers side one group and mothers side another group. when I logged in using a user on my dads side I will only see my dads family in the Group Index as well as the Individual Index page which is good. but when I click on an individual I will see the linage of my mom's side. Since its in another group and I should not have access to it why am I able to see it and go into the individual pages through there?
